January 15, 2010, Newsletter Issue #14: Lather Up With Soft Suds

Tip of the Week

Donít add potentially harmful chemicals to someone elseís water supply.

Phtalates, banned from certain products in Europe, are omnipresent in North American grooming products. According to the World Wildlife Fund, prolonged exposure to these chemicals can disrupt hormones in both humans and animals. In addition, many dishwashing detergents contain phosphates. If youíre camping, donít spill soap into lakes and streams. Phosphates cause algae bloom, which can choke off the oxygen required by other living organisms. Stick with plant-based biodegradable cleansers or at least switch to dye and fragrance-free, which cause less harm.
