Skimp On Sulfites: Organic Wine Tastings

Organic wine producers use compost instead of fertilizer, weeding instead of herbicides and companion planting instead of pesticides. However, if it's sulfites that bother you, be aware that some organic wineries do add them to keep the wine stable, but in much smaller quantities than conventional producers do. Some examples of organic wineries include:

  • The California-based Fitzpatrick Winery(www.fitzpatrickwinery.com/ or 800-245-9166) : Their Earth Friendly Organic Wines are bottled in recycled glass. Tastings are held in a handcrafted log lodge, and guests who want to stay longer can check in to the B&B.
  • The Wheels and Wine Tour (www.niagaraworldwinetours.com/cycle_fs.html or 1-800-680-7006) combines biking with wine tasting. You roll through the vineyards and orchards of the Niagara-on-the-Lake district and visit three wineries, including Frogpond Farm Organic Winery, Ontario's only organic winery. It costs about $60 for the tastings and tour.
  • The organic kitchen site (http://www.organickitchen.com/vineyards.html) provides a directory of organic wineries in North America, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
