How can I compensate for the pollution my flight produces?

Fly Free

Go carbon free by helping reduce overall global emissions. Environmentalists agree that just one round-trip overseas flight can produce more carbon dioxide than a year's worth of car travel. Look for airlines that offer you the option of tagging a carbon offset onto your ticket. While this won't snuff out your trip's emissions, it will help balance them out. British Airways, for example, adds $16 per ton of carbon produced. They calculate the offset based on the distance flown and the type of aircraft used: A round trip from Washington to London will spew out 1.6 tons of CO2 and cost about $26.00 extra for an offset. British Airways then passes the money onto Climate Care (www.climatecare.org), an organization that supports renewable energy projects in developing countries.
