Many fisheries, especially along the Atlantic coast, have collapsed, causing unemployment for fishermen and near extinction for certain species. Inadequate regulation and certain fishing methods has put cod, bluefish tuna and sharks on the endangered list. It is estimated that one in four marine animals, such as birds, sharks and dolphins, is discarded as bycatch -- species caught accidentally by a trawl net. Fish farming is not always a good solution for replenishing the stock because it relies on the use of antibiotics to prevent the spread of disease in small spaces. Look for wild Pacific salmon and pollock instead and use the convenient wallet-sized guide at http://www.nrdc.org/health/effects/mercury/guide.asp to make responsible choices.
